Dishwasher Not Draining Completely: Manual-First Checks

Is the remaining water abnormal?

A small amount of water in the filter or sump may be normal for some dishwashers. Compare the amount and location with your model's manual. A deep pool, dirty water left above the filter, an error code or a new failure to drain warrants investigation. Do not run repeated cycles if water is rising or leaking.

Check accessible parts

1. Let the appliance cool and identify its model and any error code. Follow the manual for safe access to its user-serviceable filter.
2. Remove and wash the filter as instructed, clear visible food debris without reaching into a pump, then reinstall the filter fully. Whirlpool lists a clogged filter as one possible cause of poor drainage.
3. Check whether the kitchen sink also drains slowly. If a sink air gap is present, clean only its accessible cover and opening as its manufacturer directs. Do not bypass the air gap.
4. Look at the visible under-sink hose for kinks or leakage without pulling the machine out or flattening a required high loop. If the issue began after a disposal was installed, tell the installer; its inlet connection may need checking.
5. After the accessible checks, follow the model's instructions for a controlled drain test. Stop if water backs up, reaches wiring or leaks onto the floor.

When to call

Call an appliance technician or plumber if the filter and accessible checks do not help, the hose is hidden or damaged, the air gap spills, the sink backs up, or water reaches cabinets, flooring or electrical equipment. Record the model, error code, water level and whether the problem began after installation or service.
