Dripping Bathroom Faucet Handle: Safe Checks and Next Steps

Find where the drip starts

Dry the faucet and surrounding counter, then observe whether water appears at the handle only while the faucet runs, drips from the spout when it is off, or leaks below the sink. Splashing onto the handle can look like a leak. A handle leak may run onto the base; Moen suggests using a paper towel around the handle during a controlled test to help identify it. Stop the test if water reaches the cabinet or floor.

A spout drip often involves a valve or cartridge that is not sealing; water at a handle may involve a stem, seal or cartridge. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Photograph the first wet point and identify the faucet model.

Plan the repair for the exact faucet

Check the manufacturer's parts diagram and instructions for the model. Handles, cartridges, stems and seals are not interchangeable simply because they look alike. Delta's leaky-faucet guide describes closing both supplies, relieving remaining water and removing the handle before model-specific valve service. For your faucet, follow the exact manual rather than applying an unrelated cartridge procedure.

Before disconnecting or opening the faucet, close both identified supply stops without force and verify that flow stops in both hot and cold positions. If either stop is stuck, leaking or does not shut off, stop and call a plumber. Cover the sink drain to catch small parts. Do not pry decorative trim, twist the faucet body or overtighten fasteners.

When to call
