Should You Wash Dishes on the Garbage Disposal Side?
The disposal side is often best for food scraps, but sink layout, dishwasher connection, and disposal condition change the safest workflow.
Which side should you use?
You can wash dishes in either bowl of a double sink. The disposal side can be convenient for small scraps your specific disposal accepts, while the other side may be useful for soaking, rinsing or holding utensils. Choose according to bowl size, working space and drainage; there is no need to send food scraps through the disposal to wash dishes.

A practical routine
- Scrape large scraps into locally accepted compost or trash and collect cooled grease separately. Do not pour grease or oil down either drain.
- Use the bowl with enough room for washing, and reserve the other for rinsing or draining if that suits your sink. Keep utensils in a separate area rather than over the disposal opening.
- If using the disposal for accepted small scraps, follow its manual. For example, InSinkErator recommends cool water before and during operation, feeding scraps gradually, and running water briefly afterward for its disposals. Other models may differ.
- Clean accessible strainers and wipe the sink when finished. If water drains slowly or appears beneath the cabinet, stop and investigate rather than continuing to fill the sink.
When to stop using the disposal
If the unit hums, smells hot, trips power or the sink backs up, stop using it. Follow the exact model's troubleshooting instructions or call for service. Never reach into the grinding chamber. If a dishwasher drains through the disposal and water backs up, stop using the dishwasher as well until the cause is checked; the connection does not by itself establish where a blockage lies.
