Does running a disposal dry damage it?

A brief accidental dry run does not by itself prove that a disposal is damaged, but do not routinely grind food without water. Water helps move ground food through the drain, and disposal manufacturers specify water during operation. Without it, scraps may remain in the unit or drain. The consequences depend on what was ground, the appliance and the plumbing; there is no reliable way to diagnose damage from the dry run alone.

Use water as directed
