Dishwasher Won’t Start: Manual-First Checks Before Service
A dishwasher that will not start can involve power, door latch, control lock, delay start, water supply, or error-code issues; use the manual first.
Check the controls and door
A dishwasher may appear not to start because its door is not latched, a control lock or delayed start is active, a previous cycle is unfinished, or power or water is unavailable. The controls and indicators differ by model. Find the model number and use its manual; do not bypass the door switch or open an electrical panel.
- Look for a message. Photograph a display code or blinking-light pattern and check its meaning in the model manual.
- Check the door. Look for an item or rack preventing closure; reposition it and close the door gently. Do not force a damaged latch. Whirlpool notes that a backward lower rack can prevent latching on some models.
- Check lock and delay settings. A lock indicator may disable controls, and delayed start can postpone a cycle. Use the exact manual to cancel or unlock; button sequences are not universal. GE describes delay-hour indicators for its applicable models.
- Select a cycle and start as directed. Some models require a specific start-and-close sequence or a previous cycle to finish. If the machine starts but does not fill, use the manual and seek service if necessary.
If the display is dark
Check whether the home has a power outage and whether an accessible, correctly identified GFCI or breaker has tripped, without opening a panel. Follow the equipment and household instructions. If water is present near electrical equipment, a breaker trips again, there is a burning smell, or the plug or wiring is damaged or inaccessible, stop and call qualified service. Do not move the dishwasher or reach into wet areas to access a connection.
When to stop and call service
Call the manufacturer or appliance technician if the door will not latch, a code persists, the machine leaks, or the checks do not help. Record the model, code, lights, timing and recent power or installation changes. Do not disassemble the appliance, bypass switches, force a water shutoff or repeatedly reset a tripping circuit.
