Dishwasher Soap Dispenser Not Closing: Safe Checks Before Service

Why won't the detergent dispenser close?

Excess detergent, caked residue, an obstruction or a damaged latch can prevent a dishwasher detergent door from closing. Check the cup and latch gently before assuming the dispenser needs replacement. The exact mechanism and detergent quantity depend on the model.

Check the cup and latch

1. With the dishwasher off and cool, pull out the racks and look for a utensil or other item interfering with the dispenser. Do not run a cycle with the door open.
2. Remove excess detergent. Whirlpool notes that overfilling can prevent closure; use the amount and type in your own model's instructions.
3. If residue is present, Whirlpool recommends warm water and a soft cloth for its dispenser. Follow your model's care instructions, wipe the accessible cup and latch gently, and dry the cup before adding fresh detergent. Do not mix cleaning chemicals.
4. Try closing the empty dispenser gently as directed in the manual. Do not pry, bend or bypass the latch. If it closes empty but not with detergent, check the amount and whether the tablet fits the intended compartment.

After it closes, reload dishes so tall pans or handles cannot block the door from opening during the wash. A dispenser that closes but fails to open is a different symptom: check the load and model instructions before assuming the latch has failed.

When to arrange service

If the empty, clean door still will not latch, or a spring or latch is loose, cracked or missing, stop forcing it and contact an appliance technician. Record the brand and model, a photo of the dispenser, the detergent used and whether the door closes when empty. Do not remove door panels or touch electrical components.
